Department Facilities
The Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy is located in 20,000 square feet of newly renovated laboratory space in the Queen Lane campus of Drexel University College of Medicine. The Queen Lane campus also houses the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology and the teaching facilities for medical students. The Department has several confocal microscopes including a BioRad MRC600, the Delta Vision deconvolution system, the Zeiss Pascal system and the new Leica Laser Scanning Spectral Confocal Microscope TCS SP2, advanced image acquisition and analysis systems and facilities for tissue culture, biochemistry and molecular biology. Within the laboratories of individual faculty facilities are available for neurophysiology, computer vision, neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, small-animal behavioral testing and molecular and cell biology.
The EM facilities in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy include a 15 year old Joel 100S Electron Microscope with darkroom and accompanying water re-circulation and vacuum systems. The scope has been recently serviced and all aspects of the facility are fully functional. Because the instrument is aging, only personnel with extensive experience are permitted to use it. However, in the near future, the department will co-administer with the Department of Pathology a new EM facility with an entirely digital electron microscope to be located at MCP Hospital.
The Queen Lane Library on the main floor of the Drexel University College of Medicine Campus (2900 Queen Lane), houses books, journals, and other materials to support the educational needs of students in the first two years of medical school, and the research needs of the basic sciences departments. The collection focuses on the basic sciences, including research literature in biochemistry, microbiology/immunology, neuroscience, physiology, molecular biology and cell biology; there is also a core collection of books on clinical medicine. Approximately 17,000 books and journals and over 200 videotapes and slide sets are available.
Drexel University College of Medicine has developed a reputation for excellence in medical education and research. Together, the departments of Neurobiology and Anatomy, Pharmacology and Physiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry form an interdisciplinary core of scientists involved in neuroscience research.
